An international automotive manufacturer needed to rapidly modernize their digital ecosystem to support direct-to-consumer sales models. However, they were anchored by a heavily customized, monolithic SAP ECC core system. They needed to connect this core to over 30 modern cloud applications, including Salesforce, Workday, and custom-built dealer portals.
Modifying the core ECC system to build point-to-point integrations was out of the question, as it would jeopardize their future migration path to S/4HANA. They needed a highly scalable, middleware-driven approach that adhered strictly to a 'Clean Core' strategy, allowing them to innovate at the edge while keeping the core ERP pristine.
Architectural Solution
We positioned SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) as the central innovation and integration layer. Utilizing the SAP Integration Suite, we built highly secure, scalable API hooks and event-driven microservices that decoupled the front-end cloud applications from the ECC backend.
By leveraging Cloud Integration and API Management on BTP, we standardized the way data (such as inventory levels, pricing, and order status) was exposed to the dealer portals. We also implemented robust error-handling and retry mechanisms, ensuring that transient network failures wouldn't result in lost orders. This architecture not only solved their immediate integration needs but also laid a future-proof foundation for their eventual transition to S/4HANA.
